October 15, 2014 – Toyota has issued three new recalls which equate to more than 1.75 million vehicles being recalled. The largest and smallest of the three recalls mostly covers vehicle sold in Japan. The second recall of 759,000 vehicles include 423,000 Lexus models sold in the United States made between 2005 and 2010. The Lexus IS, GS and LS luxury sedans and Toyota Auris compact hatchback are among the 10 models being called back. Toyota is trying to fix an issue with the fuel delivery pipes which can increase the risk of a vehicle fire. This recall certainly keeps eyes on Toyota this year. Earlier this year Toyota agreed to pay a $1.2 billion dollar fine, the largest ever paid out, to settle a criminal investigation into its conduct during an acceleration recall 4 years ago of more than 10 million vehicles.
GM also has the public’s attention this year. GM has recalled more than 30 million vehicle so far in 2014. General Motors has been taking a lot of heat with regards to how it handled an ignition switch flaw which has been traced back to at least 23 reported deaths in the U.S.
Future Auto Market
Ford is looking to get back into the small Pickup market in the U.S. Not since the Ford Ranger has Ford had a small or mid-sized pickup on the U.S. market. According to USA Today, Ford marketing leader Dave Scott noted that it would likely have to be a compact pickup, smaller in size than the recently debuted full-frame Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, and may even be better served on a unibody platform. In order to succeed, the truck would also have to offer as much as 25 percent better fuel economy than the full-size pickups and cost $5,000 to $6,000 less than a base-model half-ton.
Tesla’s newly launched Model SD electric may in the future have the capability of picking up its passengers autonomously by using the company’s new Autopilot function. According to Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, by integrating a number of safety technologies, Tesla’s Autopilot system could eventually enable its electric cars to drive and collect passengers without anyone at the wheel.
Motor Trend SUV of the Year – 2015
Honda CR-V is named Motor Trend SUV of the Year for 2015. Motor Trend has announced 2015’s SUV of the Year, from a category which included Porsche Macan, Cadillac Escalade, Subaru Outback, Chevrolet Suburban and BMW X5. The 2015 Honda CR-V took the gold calipers in the SUV category. Motor Trend looked at six different categories ranging from overall design to safety and efficiency.
Ford Fiesta and Focus Transmission Shudder (ie: feels like a teenager learning to drive stick) Caused by Internal Fluid Leaks: A new Ford Technical Service Bulletin (“TSB”) addresses a potential mechanical defect to do with transmission fluid leaking internally, causing a shudder or “trailer hitching” feeling while driving. TSB 14-0047 was reported by Ford on March 11, 2014, saying: Ford – When taking off from a stop, using light acceleration, the automatic transmission would exhibit an intermittent transmission shudder and may or may not be leaking transmission fluid from clutch housing.
