Cars

Passenger cars are the most common vehicles covered under California’s Lemon Law. This includes sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and wagons of all sizes and price points. Repeated engine failures, transmission issues, electrical malfunctions, braking defects, and software problems are frequent triggers for Lemon Law claims. If your car keeps returning to the dealership for the same issue or spends excessive time out of service, you may have rights.

Trucks

Light-duty and heavy-duty trucks used for personal or family purposes are commonly protected. These often experience drivetrain failures, suspension problems, steering defects, and complex electrical issues that can be difficult to permanently repair. Because trucks are frequently relied on for work and daily transportation, defects that compromise reliability can significantly affect their use and value. Lemon Law exists to address exactly these types of ongoing problems.

EVs

Electric vehicles introduce new technology and new categories of defects. Battery failures, charging system malfunctions, software glitches, range loss, and power management issues are among the most common EV-related Lemon Law concerns. When these issues recur under warranty, EV owners may be entitled to remedies, just as with traditional gas-powered vehicles. The law does not treat EVs differently when defects substantially affect safety, use, or value.

ATVs

All-terrain vehicles purchased for personal or recreational use may qualify when covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. Common ATV defects that may qualify under the Lemon Law include engine stalling, overheating, transmission problems, and electrical failures. Because ATVs are often used off-road, safety-related defects are especially serious. If repeated repair attempts fail to correct the same problem, Lemon Law protections may apply.

UTVs

Utility task vehicles (side-by-sides) used for recreation, property maintenance, or personal transportation may also fall under Lemon Law coverage. These vehicles frequently involve complex drivetrains, electronic systems, and suspension components. When the defects interfere with operation or safety and remain unresolved under warranty despite repeated attempts at repairs, UTV owners may have a valid Lemon Law claim.

Trailers

Certain trailers sold with manufacturer warranties can be covered, including travel trailers and some utility or specialty trailers. Defects may involve structural issues, electrical systems, plumbing, braking components, or frame integrity. When these problems substantially affect usability or safety and persist after reasonable repair attempts, the Lemon Law may apply.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are commonly protected under the California Lemon Law. Typical defects include engine failure, transmission problems, fuel system issues, electrical malfunctions, and braking defects. Because motorcycles offer little physical protection to riders, safety-related defects are taken very seriously. Repeated unsuccessful repair attempts can trigger Lemon Law rights.

Boats

Personal-use boats sold with manufacturer warranties may qualify for Lemon Law protection. Defects can involve engines, transmissions, steering systems, electrical components, or hull integrity. When a boat repeatedly fails to operate as intended, and the manufacturer cannot fix the issue, Lemon Law may require a buyback, replacement, or compensation.

Luxury/High-end/Sports Cars

High-performance, luxury, or sports vehicles often contain advanced engineering and sophisticated electronics. While these vehicles carry premium price tags, they are not immune to serious and ongoing defects. Repeated problems with engines, transmissions, suspension systems, software, infotainment, or driver-assist features can qualify under Lemon Law just like any other vehicle. Paying more does not mean accepting ongoing defects.

Key Criteria for Each Lemon Type

Whether you purchased, leased, or bought a certified pre-owned vehicle, Lemon Law protection depends on how the vehicle was acquired and the warranty coverage in place.

  • Purchased New: originally sold as new and protected by the manufacturer’s original warranty
  • Leased: obtained through a lease and covered by a manufacturer-backed warranty
  • Certified Pre-Owned vehicles: protected by a manufacturer-backed CPO warranty
